Water is becoming an increasingly valuable commodity due to droughts and overuse. It is therefore important to learn to manage it in a more fair and sustainable matter.
This project aims to strengthen the institutional, administrative and monitoring capacities of Montenegrin institutions dealing with water management so as to improve environmental protection, enhance the conservation and sustainable management of water resources and align national policies with the EU environmental acquis.
During its implementation period, the project is expected to build up the capacities of the national institutions in charge of water management and result in full transposition of EU directives in the area of water management. This, in particular, relates to the Nitrates Directive, Floods Directive, Bathing Water Directive and Marine Strategy Framework Directive. In this way, Montenegro will improve its legislative and organizational framework on water management.
Also, the project envisages groundwater exploration by drilling in arid terrains, as well as the preparation of hydrological and hydraulic model of the Bojana river and Lake Skadar. The project will run until November 2022.
