Cross border joint initiatives for better waste management

Proper waste management is of great importance for environmental protection. This project intended to contribute to the protection of the environment and economic development of the cross-border area through more efficient waste valorisation. More specifically, the project aimed at establishing a separate waste collection and treatment system in the municipalities of Plav (Montenegro) and Gjakova (Kosovo*).

During its implementation, the project contributed to better waste management in these municipalities. In particular, it helped them establish a system where municipal waste is separated into dry and wet components. Also, it contributed to improving environmental conditions in the cross-border area through both training and technical support on waste management. The local population, including children and workers from both municipal waste collection companies, received training on the newly established system, as well as on its contribution to environmental protection in the cross-border area.

*This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244/99 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
