Enhanced Control and Management of Fisheries

Fisheries have a long tradition in both, the EU and Montenegro. The EU promotes sustainable fishing worldwide and its Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) aims that fisheries are economically, socially and ecologically sustainable. The CFP also provides a framework for the collection, management and use of fisheries data. In that sense, it is important that EU member states have harmonized electronic data collection in fisheries.

This project helped to improve control and management of the marine fisheries in Montenegro, by further aligning electronic data collection in fisheries with EU requirements and standards. Thanks to its activities, the following subsystems of the Fishery Information System (FIS) have been established: electronic log books, sale notes, register of the fishermen, register of buyers and sellers and register of the biological and sampling data.

It also provided training for relevant staff from the administration, inspection, the Institute for Marine Biology and fishermen to use relevant parts of the FIS and the corresponding User Manuals were prepared within the project.

Furthermore, this project contributed to greater safety of fishermen and its crew on vessels by establishing the Automatic Location and Identification System (AIS). As a result, 24 pieces of AIS Class A transponders for fishing fleet of Montenegro were delivered and install at ports of Ulcinj, Bar, Budva, Tivat, Herceg Novi and Kotor.

The project ended in October 2021.
