Implementation of the European Blood Transfusion System

The European Blood Directive covers all steps in the transfusion process and sets the quality and safety standards for blood in EU Member States. All countries that aspire to join the EU must reach such quality and safety standards. Montenegro is no exception. It has started the modernisation of its blood transfusion system and the European Union has provided technical and financial support for this reform.

This project aimed at setting up a modern system for blood transfusion in Montenegro in line with the EU standards. The EU provided equipment for the new premises of the Blood Transfusion Institute, while staff working in blood transfusion services in Montenegro started applying the latest techniques in their work.

The project helped create a legal and regulatory framework aligned with EU requirements and WHO recommendations. Thanks to this project, the management system was improved, the system of voluntary non-remunerated blood donation was extended and a quality control system was initiated and established. In short, this project helped make safe blood available for all citizens of Montenegro.
