MELAdetect – Early detection of melanoma of the skin, mucous membranes and eyes

The EU provides substantial financial support to cancer prevention and treatment. It does so in order to help more people to live without cancer and enable more cancer patients to be diagnosed earlier and have a better quality of life after treatment.

This project looked to raise awareness and improve methods for the prevention and treatment of melanoma of the skin, eye and mucous membranes by enabling the exchange of good practices and experiences in the cross-border area of Montenegro-BiH-Croatia.

The project helped organise workshops and lectures on the epidemiology of melanoma, the importance of early detection of melanoma and new trends in early detection and therapeutic options for its treatment. In addition, dermoscopy and ophthalmoscopy were promoted as methods of early diagnosis of melanoma, while educational info days were organised for the general public.

The project also enabled the procurement of new state-of-the-art equipment for the dermatological and ophthalmological clinic at Bar hospital. Furthermore, a modern dermoscope is now available to citizens. The dermoscope detects melanoma at an early stage, which is of great importance for starting treatment.

In short, this project helped implement early cancer diagnosis and thus prevent the development of this vicious disease in a large number of cases.
