Waste management reduces the effect of waste on environment and health, while at the same time contributes to the economy, as waste becomes a resource that can be reused. In other words, waste reduction, reuse and recycling contributes to preserving health and nature, as well as to creating new jobs and business opportunities. That is why it is important to manage and dispose of waste properly and carefully.
This project focused on the remediation of Vrtijeljka dumpsite, which represented one of the most dangerous environmental hotspots in the municipality of Cetinje. Works conducted within the project involved reallocation of certain quantities of existing waste with a view to profiling the body of the landfill. Other activities included the construction of drainage canals and excavation of absorption pits for atmospheric water, the development of biogas drainage systems, as well as the covering, recultivation and fencing of the terrain.
Thanks to these works, an illegal dumpsite of Vrtijeljka was remediated and its negative impact on the air, soil and underground waters decreased. As a result, Vrtijeljka is now a fully cleaned-up location. It is the first landfill that has been remediated with the help of the European Union and, as such, represents a good example of the efficient use of EU funds.
