Rail transport enables economic efficiency and environmental sustainability worldwide. With modern rail, transport can become smarter, cleaner and more connected. It is therefore important to develop the railway network continuously.
Montenegro’s railway network consists of three mostly electrified, standard gauge railway corridors. The first one connects the Port of Bar with Podgorica and Serbia, the second one links the cities of Podgorica and Nikšić, while the third one connects Podgorica with Albania. Continued improvement of the railway infrastructure in Montenegro is important for increasing railway efficiency and attracting passengers.

The EU rehabilitated the track of the Virpazar – Sutomore section, particularly in the Sozina tunnel. The train speed has been increased from 50 to 80km/h, by which travel time was reduced by about 3 minutes. Also, the improved railway infrastructure has increased the safety of the network and reduced the risk of accidents. Furthermore, this project has boosted the attractiveness of rail transport and opened up opportunities for its future development.
