Planet Earth is caught in the whirlwind of climate changes unfolding before our very eyes. Industrialisation based on “dirty” energy production technologies from fossil fuels and massive land, water, and air pollution have brought humanity to another crossroads. This crossroads will mark not only changes in the way we produce energy but also in the way we use the necessary energy.
In the whirlwind of climate change, the Earth has entered a war in which oil and gas have transformed from energy sources into weapons and instruments of coercion. As a result of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, energy costs in households have nearly doubled worldwide.
Faced with this fact, the European Union has accelerated its plans to replace fossil fuels by increasing the number of clean energy sources. What began as a need to stop the exploitation and use of fossil fuels and reduce pollution is now clearly linked to the strategy to ensure the energy independence of the European Union.
In this endeavor, the European Union has not forgotten its partners in the Western Balkans and has adopted a support package worth one billion euros for them. Of this total amount, Montenegro has received 30 million euros in assistance.
The disbursement of financial support from the European Union to the most vulnerable groups of citizens in Montenegro took place in April. It was agreed that 8.5 million euros would be allocated to over 40,000 pensioners with the lowest incomes and over 6,000 families receiving social assistance, who received one-time financial assistance in the amount of 150 euros or 350 euros. The remaining 21.5 million euros of EU support will be used by Montenegro to promote the use of renewable energy sources and increase energy efficiency in the future.
The European Union aims to be climate-neutral and have a net-zero greenhouse gas emissions economy by 2050. This goal is at the heart of the European Green Deal and aligns with the EU’s commitment to global climate action under the Paris Agreement. The transition to a climate-neutral society is both a significant challenge and an opportunity to build a better future for all. All segments of society and economic sectors will play a role – from the energy sector to industry, transportation and mobility, construction, agriculture, and forestry.
Montenegro and the EU share responsibility for a common future, a future that must include a strategic vision for the country’s development in terms of clean energy and climate. For a healthier and greener future…
