Podgorica, 21 September 2016 – What is Montenegro doing to foster sustainable energy use? What is the national climate change policy? Is there a way to implement the concept of sustainable urban mobility? What have the capital city’s authorities done so far when it comes to the development of cycling infrastructure and is this what cyclists want? – Answers to these questions were given at a workshop titled “Smart Mobility. Strong Economy” held in the EU Info Centre, within the framework of the European Mobility Week.
European Mobility Week is a campaign which runs from 16–22 September every year, and aims to encourage local authorities to introduce and promote sustainable transport measures and to invite people to try out alternative modes of transport.
During this year’s European Mobility Week, numerous events are being organised all over Montenegro, through which cities, organisations and all participants can contribute to environmental protection.
European Mobility Week ends with the “Car-Free Day” which will be organised on 22 September, when all the cities participating in this campaign close certain streets to car traffic and reserve them for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, either partially or throughout the day.
Starting from this year, the office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the national coordinator of the campaign, which is implemented in cooperation with the EU Delegation in Montenegro and with the support of the EU Info Centre, the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, the Ministry of the Economy, the Capital City of Podgorica, the NGO Biciklo.me, municipalities and other partners and non-governmental organisations in Montenegro.
