In honour of Europe Day, the first-time stage performance of Gramophonedzie and MAiKA in Montenegro

Europe Day celebration this year will last through May, the Delegation of the European Union to Montenegro announced. In collaboration with the EU Info Centre and Embassies of EU member states, a number of activities will take place in May, in order to engage citizens in an open discussion about the European Union, European values, benefits from the membership, and challenges within the European integration process.

The central event is scheduled for Friday, May 10th. In the European Courtyard that will be set up in the centre of Podgorica in between the Municipality and National Library buildings, an entertainment programme will be organised, while at the same time EU member states and EU projects in Montenegro will be introduced to the interested citizens.

“If you would like to learn more about some of the EU member states and part of their history and culture, join us in the European Courtyard. You will have fun, enjoy the European music and dances, children’s plays and interesting interactive games,” the representatives from the EU Delegation to Montenegro said.

The celebration of Europe Day on May 10th will continue in the evening, with a big concert traditionally presented to the citizens of Montenegro by the EU Delegation. From 8pm on, at the Independence Square in Podgorica, the performers will be regional bands Gramophonedzie Live Experience and MAiKA. This being their first guest appearance in our country, they are bringing a new kind of sound to the main Podgorica square – a successful combination of traditional and modern sound. The Gramophonedzie Live Experience is a hybrid live DJ band performing a fusion of electronic and live music, well-known for the global hit “Why Don’t You”. MAiKA, a group of experienced musicians from the region playing an unusual combination of indie, punk and Balkan rhythms, is a new phenomenon on the European scene.

“This year, we have opted for two groups that, besides quality music, promote the European values such as solidarity, tolerance, the right to diversity and equal chances for all. We invite all Montenegrin citizens to join us at the 10th May concert in celebration of these values,” the EU Delegation representatives said.

On Europe Day – 9th May – the EU Info Centre will organise a show and a workshop for children about environmental protection, one of the most important topics in the process of negotiations between Montenegro and the EU.

„Environmental protection is one of the key EU priorities, and education of young children is one of the ways to achieve this priority. On Europe Day we will transform the EU Info Centre in a small green oasis, where children will have a chance to learn trough practical examples how to plant, recycle and why it is important to protect nature,“ the EUIC representatives emphasized.

During the month in which Europe is celebrated, concerts, exhibitions, lectures and debates on topics related to membership in the European Union will be organised. Similar events will also take place in other Montenegrin municipalities.

Europe Day is celebrated annually on 9 May, in memory of the declaration delivered by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs Robert Schuman in 1950 that announced a project of reconciliation and unification in Europe – the establishment of the European Coal and Steel Community, which has over time become the European Union.
